The significance and impact of focus

The significance and impact of focus
We live in a noisy world. Our attention is pulled in many directions. Information can feel incomplete and sometimes distract us from the original question. This is particularly true in health and wellness.
We can choose to focus on anything. We can improve our focus with daily practice. And best, we can see major improvements when we apply focus to most of our activities.
In a noisy world, focus is good for our brain. Being surprised by new skills that come after focused effort is rewarding.
A small example: I started doing yoga at home. Bit by bit, the poses became easier. Every month or so, I find that I can do an entirely new balance that wasn’t possible the month before. By having even a few minutes to focus on listening to the instructions and being “in the moment”, I find it’s been amazing for the practice.
Then I thought about other activities – like spinning or running where we are often thinking incessantly, multi-tasking on our screens, or having a phone call at the same time. No focus. How much better might our workout be (for the body and mind) if we were to simply focus on that one task and pay attention to how we feel? So I started. I put away the screen, stopped having calls, and didn’t try to think – the improvements were incredible. I felt better afterwards and my metrics showed better VO2max and fitness age.
It seems as though our world is continuously asking us to distract ourselves. For our health and wellness, I would suggest that simple focus is a great place to start.
