Generating resilience

Generating resilience

I’ve told you a bit about the Secret Cell. I’d like to connect the dots on resilience – in our lives and in our bodies.

Let’s talk about resilience. We hear it a lot these days. The notion that we can have the strength to handle challenges – emotional or physical. We hear about ways to “build up” our resilience, which gives us the message that there are things we can do to enhance our capacity to handle challenges.

We certainly know it’s possible to improve our physical strength. Training for a marathon, or a bike race. We also know that a good night’s sleep can help us restore and gather strength for the next day.

What about endothelial resilience? We have daily stressors on our 60,000 miles of Secret Cells. Things beyond our control such as pollution, genetic risks for high cholesterol, and jobs that force us to be inactive for hours at a time. BUT, did you know we have things we can do to enhance the resilience of the Secret Cell? Exercise, good nutrition, deep breathing/meditation to reduce stress, and simple acts of kindness will all improve endothelial cell resilience.

Now imagine you’ve equipped your Secret Cell to give a “high five” your 60,000 miles!

Easy options to try:

· Try 60 seconds of slow deep breaths before you start each day

· A simple act of kindness to someone each day to lower stress

· A short walk instead of sitting

Little changes add up – you’ll be amazed at how you begin to feel!
