The importance of play

Living beings love to move. Some more than others. As humans, our design lets us climb, jump, twist, and run. These beautiful, coordinated movements are an integral part of our childhood. As adults, life often gets in the way. Our brain, eyes, ears, and musculoskeletal system benefit from fun, mobile movements. We can return to our childhood roots. And we should…

By incorporating playful activities into our lives, we can build that foundation and “prime” our systems for a wide range of movements. This sets the stage for building strong feet, strong fingers, quick reflexes, and improved coordination. It also protects us against injury and strain. Novelty brings an added benefit to the brain and body alike.

You can find playful activities inside and outside the gym – take your pick. Recently, I went bouldering with Cam at an indoor gym. It was FUN! Movements that my brain and body had to figure out together. Small muscles were engaged that I don’t usually use. The feeling of leaping to new holds, letting yourself fall onto mats in a safe environment, and figuring out a 3D puzzle is exactly what our systems need.

Can you add a bit of healthy play into your life this month? Ultimately, your Secret Cell will benefit from activities that keep you moving for as long as possible!

Ideas to try include:

· Balance boards

· Indoor climbing or try a game of pickleball

· Dancing – solo or with whomever you can find
